IDRC2012-9th International Donor Registry Conference and WMDA Working Group Meetings in Sydney in May 2012

Invitation

On behalf of the Australian Bone Marrow Donor Registry (ABMDR) and the World Marrow Donor Association (WMDA), I invite you to join us for the 9th International Donor Registry Conference (IDRC) and WMDA Working Group Meetings in Sydney in May 2012.

The conference theme, ‘HPC transplantation in the next decade: bringing experience to embrace the future’, and the program will provide an opportunity for discussion and the exchange of ideas between professionals working in clinical programs in hospitals, clinical and research laboratories, donor registries and cord blood banks.

The conference will explore the challenges that the future will bring for clinical HPC transplantation, tissue typing, cord blood banking and searching. Prominent international and regional speakers will explore questions about the new possibilities for registries, science and technology, and the ethical issues that they raise as well as the potential impacts on donors.

The venue selected for the conference – the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre, located in the middle of the city of Sydney – has, as I am sure you know, a prime location and is one of the best convention centres in the world. The Welcome Reception will be held at the Sydney Opera House and the Conference Dinner will be held in an iconic building with views that highlight the beauty of the city.

I look forward to seeing you at the IDRC 2012 in Sydney.

Jeremy Chapman
Chair ABMDR

Why you should attend

Over the course of the three day conference you will hear about the latest research and developments in HPC transplantation. The conference will also cover new uses of HPC and of other cord blood cells as well as new models of cord blood banking, tissue typing and the use of KIR typing in donor selection.

You will learn about regulatory frameworks and the ethical challenges of bio-banking, regenerative medicine and reprogramming medicine. You will be able to participate in the discussion about donor care and donor registry management.

You will be able to hear current evidence, see developing research, talk to other professionals of the field, share your own work and experience and participate in workshops.
You will be stimulated by discussion of the opportunities ahead and learn of practical examples and experiences.

We hope that you will come away armed with new ideas and solutions and motivated by the challenging time ahead in this important field.

Australian Bone Marrow Donor Registry

The ABMDR is a not-for-profit organisation that manages the processes of recruiting volunteer bone marrow donors, searching and selecting donors for patients in need of transplant and following-up the ABMDR donors post-donation. The ABMDR is also responsible for the administration of AusCord, the National Cord Blood Collection Network of public cord blood banks in Australia.

The registry in Australia works closely with hospitals and the medical community through transplant and collection centres; with the scientific community via the tissue typing and bone marrow transplant laboratories; with AusCord; and with the Australian Red Cross Blood Service Bone Marrow Donor Centres.

We liaise daily with members of the global network of stem cell registries by collecting and distributing information that enables transplants and with the WMDA to share knowledge and expertise.

World Marrow Donor Association

The WMDA fosters international collaboration to facilitate the exchange of high quality haemopoietic stem cells for clinical transplantation worldwide and to promote the interests of donors.

Some of the mechanisms used by WMDA to achieve this mission are:

  • Implementation of standards to enhance the quality of registries and their policies and procedures and an accreditation process
  • Establishment of Working Groups who develop and recommend best practice in terms of the medical, ethical, technical, quality and financial aspects of international haemopoietic stem cell transplantation
  • Bi-annual meetings
  • Biennial international donor registry conference which provides an excellent forum for presentations of the latest results in haemopoietic stem cell transplantation
